Dear Parents,

Over the next few weeks, I will be adding content to this page and links that you may find helpful.  If there is specific content you would like on this page, please email me your suggestions.  This site will include bus rules, our dress code, dates for meetings involving parents, and a description of Primary School routines such as the process for picking up a child during the school day and the morning and afternoon parent pick-up procedures.  I hope having this information in one place will be helpful.  Check back often for updates.

Sincerely,

Phillip Schedlbauer, Principal

Internet Safety

In the last issue of the Focus, I wrote about the importance of a safety plan to have in place for your children if they ever come home to an empty house. This month, I would like to emphasize another area that we address in school on a daily basis that can also be a concern at home. Internet safety is a high priority at the Primary School. The school internet access is screened by a filter named Bess that severely limits the websites that are accessible in the school. Even with this filter, our students never surf the web. All websites that are used by our students have been previously viewed by the professional staff as to content and appropriateness in supporting our curriculum. Whenever students are online, the professional staff continually monitors the use to ensure that the children are in the right place using the right programs.

At home, I know online computer safety is also a large concern. There are some basic safety rules that your child should always follow. These rules are not just for children. Many of them are true for adults that use the internet as well. Teach your children to be safe and monitor what they are doing on line.

  • Strangers online are no different than strangers they meet in person. Children should never share personal information (names, addresses, passwords, phone numbers, and school name) on any website. They should always check with you if this information is ever requested.
  • Be a part of your child's online experience. Know the websites that your child is visiting. It is a good idea to develop a favorites listing just for the websites you approve.
  • Decide on a reasonable time limit for computer use and stick to it.
  • Put the computer that your child will be using in a place that is easily supervised. Children do not need to have the computer in their bedroom.
  • Talk to your child about being a good online citizen. If something online is upsetting or just doesn't feel right, they should tell you right away.

Computers are an amazing tool that bring the whole world right into your home. There are fantastic websites that provide very useful information. It is a tool that will be very much a part of your children's lives in school and into adulthood. Safe internet practices need to be practiced and today is a good time to start. There is a link on the Primary School's library media center's website for more information. I would like to thank Mrs. Gordon, our library media specialist, for helping me with the content of this article.
