English 10
The tenth grade is divided into 13 units of study:
1.Short stories 2.Lord of the Flies 3.The Old Man and the Sea 4.MacBeth or Julius Caesar 5.Antigone 6.Animal Farm 7.The Contender 8.Research 9.Essay writing 10.English Regents preparation 11.Poetry 12.Non-Fiction 13.Vocabulary
Writing skills are taught with each unit. (1 credit)
English 10 Honors
The Honors program is a more enhanced version of English 10. Admission criteria: REQUIRED
- Read and successfully pass an examination/project of an assigned reading over the summer vacation.
- Have an acceptable attendance record. Plus, successfully satisfy one of the following two:
A. English average = 90 or above
B. Department recommendation based on class participation, work ethic, leadership ability, etc. exhibited in English 9.
C. Take a department exam scoring a minimum of 85%.
In addition to the English 10 units of study, Honors students will spend time preparing for the PSAT, examining the device of satire, including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, reading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, and enhancing their creative writing. The units of study lend themselves to more performance and group-based assessments. (1 credit)
English 11
The English 11 curriculum is divided into the following units of study:
1.American Speeches 2.The Crucible 3.To Kill a Mockingbird 4.Regents Preparation 5.Transcendentalists 6.Research – American authors & Literary Criticism 7.American Poetry 8.The Great Gatsby 9.Of Mice and Men
Within each unit of study, writing skills and vocabulary are integrated. Students directly learn the ELA Task 3 and continue to prepare and review for the Regents ELA Exam in January. (1 credit)
English 12
English 12 is a full year course, which consists of an eclectic mix of language arts study, as well as various other real world applications for language arts. It will be a challenging, yet enjoyable course composed of writing, (both analytical and creative), short stories, poetry, drama, time management skills, etc. Successful completion of the senior research project, a major component of the course, is a graduation requirement. (1 credit)
English 11 & 12 - Advanced Placement:
Language and Composition

AP Exam Required
This course will engage students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. It will also help students become skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer's purpose, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way generic conventions and the
resources of language contribute to the effectiveness in writing. Students will be required to take an AP exam in May which may earn them 3-6 college credits at most U.S. colleges and universities. Students are required to incur the cost of approximately $82 for the AP exam. (1 credit)
Admission Criteria:
1.Read an assigned novel and successfully complete a summer project. 2. Earn an 88% or higher on the required department entrance exam. 3.Must meet one out of the following two criteria:
- English Department Recommendation – based on factors such as: writing and thinking skills, willingness to participate in class, ability to manage time and take responsibility for his/her learning (completing missed work in a timely fashion, requesting assignments early when class will be missed, obtaining extra help when needed), and commitment to being in school.
- Student's GPA for English 9 must have been 90% or higher, and his/her average grade for the first 20 weeks of English 10 and 11 must be 90% or higher.
