LOTE

Languages Other Than English

Department Head: David Makepeace

Within the framework of the Regents requirements, the LOTE (Languages other than English) department has designed its program to offer both the linguistic and

non-linguistic aspects of French and Spanish, as well as the cultures of those countries. This affords students the opportunity to master other languages as a tool for communication and experience the enrichment of new and different thoughts and ways of life. The basis of our philosophy is to develop communicative competency in the target language in the four skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

French and Spanish Level III

Pre-requisite: French Level II, Spanish Level II

This course will further develop the student's ability to function in the target language on various topics. There will be increased practice in the following: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and guided and free composition. Culture is infused in the topics covered. Preparation for the Regent's Exam taken at the end of the year will include review of grammar and vocabulary, as well as the reinforcement of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. (1 credit)

French and Spanish Level IV

Pre-requisite: French or Spanish Level III

May be taken for college credit.

Spanish and French IV are designed to engage students who have finished the Regents sequence in their respective language. Students will be actively involved in projects such as writing journals and children's books, watching, reviewing and discussing movies in the target language, discussing current issues in seminars and reading literature excerpts. In addition, students will review and reinforce earlier language skills by covering four chapters of a college level textbook. There will be chapter tests, a midterm and a final exam. Three hours credit may be earned through GCC. (1 credit)

Spanish and French Level V

Spanish and French Level V are designed as a continuation of Level IV and will use the same text series.
