Elementary School Phase IV Competencies

  • Dear Families,

    As the district moves into Phase 4 of the digital learning plan, I wanted to reach out to you to clarify the next steps for our educational plan. This will cover from now until the end of the school year. Since we will not be able to return to the building this year, we are asking families to commit to a reasonable level of engagement to maintain your child’s academic growth.

    Core Competencies
    As Superintendent Cole presented in his family video forum, we are introducing Core Competencies for each grade level. In short, we are defining the essential learning for each student to achieve through their work in the Google Classrooms between now and the end of the school year. Grade level competencies are posted to the right. They will also be posted in your child’s Google Classroom.

    Home Learning Expectations remain the same
    Please be assured, we have selected these competencies knowing that every family is facing different challenges during the COVID quarantine. They are designed to not exceed the two hours per day expectation. If your child is engaging each school day in their Google Classroom, they will be fine.

    Report Card
    These competencies will become the report card for the digital learning timeframe. I want to stress, most of our students are engaging in the work to the best of their ability and, if continued, will be in great shape to meet these competencies. For our students with IEPs and 504 plans, your child’s individual needs will be considered in rating his/her progress toward meeting the competencies.

    Possible Grade Level Retention Review
    If students do not engage in the competencies, there will be a retention review meeting scheduled to determine if that child is ready to move to the next grade level. This will consider both the student’s work in the school and digital settings. These competencies and our teachers’ instructional activities were designed so that students who engage in their teacher’s Google Classroom throughout each week will be in a great position to achieve this minimum requirement.

    As a parent of three elementary children, I know that their learning does not succeed without our support. If you have any struggles, please reach out to your child’s teacher as we are all committed to helping families during this difficult time. Livonia has amazing teachers who truly care about your child and their success.
