Budget Breakdown: Understanding School Taxes

A common question we have heard is:
“If my assessment went up, does that mean the school district collects that same increase?”
The answer is no.
The school tax levy is the amount the District collects. This is the part of the tax picture the Board of Education controls through the budget process. The proposed tax levy increase is 2.9492%.
The tax levy determines the size of the pie.
Reassessment, equalization rates, exemptions, and final assessment rolls affect how the pie is divided among properties. These factors are outside the school district’s control.
Final tax rates will not be known until final assessment rolls and other required information are complete. However, based on current projections, the District expects a substantial decrease in the tax rate. Livonia CSD’s tax rate was $21.75 per $1,000 in 2019-20 and is projected to be approximately $11.24 per $1,000 for 2026-27.
